The Foursquare Gospel Church Yaba, over the weekend, flagged off its 70th anniversary with a vibrant rally that brought the Yaba community to life.
Starting from the National Headquarters Church at Alagomeji, members from the headquarters and all churches under the Yaba District, thronged the streets dressed in different colours of the official 70th anniversary vests. With gospel music blaring from the DJ and the church’s band, the streets echoed with joyful praises as participants danced and sang to the glory of God.
Leading the rally was the Resident Pastor at the National Headquarters Church, Reverend Olayemi Ayoko, alongside members of the 70th Anniversary Planning Committee headed by Elder Kehinde Lawanson.
A major highlight of the rally was a stop-over at the Yaba Local Council Development Area, where Rev. Yemi Ayoko, on behalf of the General Overseer of the church, Reverend (Dr.) Sam Aboyeji, presented a special letter to the council chairman, Honourable Dr. Kayode Adedeji Omiyale.
“We are grateful to God for 70 years of His faithfulness. What started here in Alagomeji by missionaries Harold and Fay Curtis has grown into a national church with global impact. Today, we celebrate not just our history, but also our ongoing relevance in the society.” Rev Ayoko said.
While expatiating on the relevance of the Foursquare church in the society in 70 years and thanking the council for supporting the church in all areas, Rev. Ayoko said, “We have grown with Yaba. Our presence here is not just religious but civic. This letter to the local council is a symbol of our partnership with governance and our role as a stakeholder in the progress of this great community.”
In his response, Honourable Omiyale expressed heartfelt appreciation for the visit and commended the Foursquare Gospel Church for its consistency and spiritual contributions over the decades.
“I’m honoured to receive the Foursquare Gospel Church here today. There is a time to be born and a time to count our days. Just as individuals mark birthdays, so must organisations reflect on their milestones. Celebrating 70 years is a testimony to God's grace, discipline, and service to humanity.”
He also noted the church’s immense support since the creation of the Yaba LCDA and its impact in different wards in the council while also noting the spiritual significance that Foursquare Gospel Church holds in Yaba.
“Yaba LCDA was created in 2003 by the current president of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, when he served as governor of Lagos State. It comprises nine vibrant wards and has continued to grow, and it’s been my honour to serve as chairman for the last eight years.
“Yaba is a religious centre in Nigeria. We are blessed to host several national headquarters of Christian denominations, and the
Foursquare Church stands out for its integrity, leadership, and service. You are not just a church but a beacon in this community.”
Omiyale also appealed for continued prayer for the peace of Nigeria.
“Let us keep praying for the peace and restructuring of Nigeria. And as we look forward, may we gather again to celebrate your 80th and even 100th anniversary. Yaba will continue to stand with you.”
From the council office, the rally continued through major streets of Yaba, with members joyfully inviting the public to partake in the series of events commemorating the milestone.
Founded 70 years ago, the Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria has evolved from a small missionary base into a nationwide movement with a strong presence in all states and representation in 156 countries. Its National Headquarters remains at 66 Akinwumi Street, Alagomeji-Yaba, the very site where it all began.
