Believers are pilgrims here on earth. Just as Abram was called to leave his country, his people, and his father’s house, for the land that God will show him (Gen. 12:1); our journey here is also a journey of faith and purpose.
It is only a faith-walk with Christ that gives life its meaning and purpose, in this dark world. Without this, life is an endless wandering in the wilderness. Only Jesus Christ the son of God is the one who knows the way through the wilderness of this turbulent world. That is why without mincing words He declared, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me” John 14:6.
Therefore, anyone who desires to get to the promise land must follow In His Steps. This will definitely require a decision that will affect your direction and ultimately determine your destination. So it is a call to make a change that will keep you fulfilled- Matt. 4:19.
There are three major levels I consider to be very essential as we follow the Master’s steps through life.
1. We must follow In His Steps to Experience the Power of His Transformation.
Jesus’ primary assignment on earth is to transform the life of everyone that will let Him. He had no sin of His own to atone for, but He took up ours, and paid the ransom for our sins with His life. Now, by His death we have been delivered from the power of darkness and have been translated into His kingdom (Col. 1:13). In His death He took your position and gave you His. Therefore, if you are born again, I congratulate you. You are a new creation, old things are gone, and the new has come! 2 Cor. 5:17. What a glorious change of position!
2. We must follow In His Steps to Participate in His Conformation Process – A Change of Passion.
Now that your veil has been taken off and you have tasted the power of new life, God will definitely desire that you move from one level of glory to another 2 Cor, 3:16-18. And this is made possible through the process of conformation. What the Lord accomplished in you, by reason of your being in Christ, must be practically brought to bear in your daily life experience through your participation. You must now have to walk In His Steps so as to conform to His image. Paul confirmed that, he had lost the passion for all the things he once cherished. He now considers them garbage, for the sake of Christ- Phil. 3:7, 8.
As we make progress in Christ, you will discover that the pathway to glory in Christ is the pathway of death and resurrection. Death is the highest expression of love, sacrifice and commitment, “Greater love had no one than this that He lay down His life for His friends.” John. 15:13. God the Father went through this process when He gave His only begotten for our redemption; Abram went through it when he gave his dearly loved son, Isaac to be sacrificed in obedience to divine instruction before God substituted him. Jesus went through this death process when He gave Himself up for our sins.
He told His disciples, “…the hour has come for the son of man to be glorified. I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single. But if it dies, it produces many seeds…whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honour the one who serves me.” John. 12:23-26.
If we must get to the place of glory and honour, we must follow Him to this place of death. It is a place of sacrifice; It is a place of laying down; It is a place where the Adamic old image is exchanged for the new, fashioned in the likeness of Christ; It is a place where passion is changed; It is a place where the Heroes and Heroin of faith are cherished; It is a place that makes resurrection possible.
Resurrection is the glory and honour that results from death. It is the glory, honour and beauty that validates the truth that when we endure and die with Him, we shall also reign with Him. 2 Tim. 2:12
3. We must follow In His Steps to fulfill His Great Commission.
Jesus did not walk on earth without leaving His footprint. And if we claim to walk in His steps, it then means that our footprint must be seen everywhere like that of our Master. He pungently demands that we leave our footprint when He declared and said, “…you are the salt of the earth…you are the light of the world…” Matt. 5:13-14. He also commissioned us to make disciple of all nations. Matt. 28:18-20. Jesus did not just change our position, or ignite the right passion in us He also gave us the noblest cause to pursue. He said unequivocally, “As my Father has sent me, so i am sending you.” Jn. 20:21. Amazingly, Jesus even guaranteed us a better result than He got only if we believed Jn. 14:12.
The whole world is our field of operation. We have the mandate, the power and the authority to subdue nations and kingdoms in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. No power, authority or dominion is strong enough to withstand us. We are fortified, we are unstoppable! The power that works in us is such that God exerted when He raised Jesus from the dead, praise God!
Will you therefore, step out of your boat and walk with the Master on this water by faith? Will you come out of your limitations, your comfort zone? Even if you have sunk before, He will yet help you up only if you will cry out.
When we walk In His Steps, we are certain that he will shed His glory on our way. The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining ever brighter till the full light of day. Prov. 4:18
